What used to be the task of specialist national police squads has become the routine work of regional and district police departments. Unfortunately, the funding for cybercrime units does not seem to grow as fast as the amounts of digital evidence.<\/p>\n<p>FIREBrick is an open source alternative to commercial hardware write blockers and disk imagers, which can be assembled from off-the shelf mass-produced components for around $199.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a short introductory video about FIREBrick:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DigitalFIRE FIREBrick\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_PmOtNyR-WM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>FIREBrick features<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Autonomous disk imaging at speeds of up to 5Gb per minute<\/li>\n<li>Images hashed on-the-fly with verification checks<\/li>\n<li>Storage disk can be encrypted (via LUKS)<\/li>\n<li>FireWire write blocker functionality, target drive is visible as a FireWire harddisk<\/li>\n<li>Portable &#8211; fits in a small HTPC case (including display) &#8211; MiniITX form factor<\/li>\n<li>Free, open source firmware<\/li>\n<li>Can be fully customised to the needs of specific departments<\/li>\n<li>Adheres to NIST Computer Forensic Tool Testing protocols<\/li>\n<li>Automatically configured internal storage (none, single disk or RAID)<\/li>\n<li>RAID mirroring and striping support<\/li>\n<li>Unlimited configurations &#8211; possible development ideas: Android imaging, Kindle imaging, USB imaging, disk image searching&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/leetobin\/firebrick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get involved<\/a>!!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>List of parts<\/h4>\n<p>To build a FIREBrick you need:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>ASRock E350M1 Motherboard<\/li>\n<li>1Gb DDR3 Desktop RAM (1333 or 1066)<\/li>\n<li>Dynamode PCIX3FW 3-Port Firewire PCIe card<\/li>\n<li>An LCD2USB 20&#215;4 display (You can buy it from <a href=\"http:\/\/stores.ebay.com\/Lcdmod-Kit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lcdmodkit<\/a> or you can make one yourself according to these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harbaum.org\/till\/lcd2usb\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">instructions<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>120W+ PSU<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You will need a case of your choice that fits a mini-ITX (pretty much any case &#8211; or even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/archives\/857-3d-printed-pc-case.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make one yourself<\/a>!).<\/p>\n<p>If you want internal storage, you will need a SATA HDD. You will need two equal-sized HDDs for internal RAID storage. If you have no storage drives, you can still use the FIREBrick as a writeblocker, if you have a single storage disk you can image to that, if you have 2 storage drives the system will configure them
